About Nagambie Lakes Wine Region

With the completion of the Craigieburn bypass, one of Australia's oldest wine producing areas - the Nagambie Lakes Wine Region - has moved ten minutes closer to Melbourne city! It's now just over an hour away to the North of Melbourne by car.

Grapes have been grown and wine made continuously in the area since 1850 and the region currently boasts two of Australia's most respected wineries - Tahbilk & Mitchelton Wines, and a fine supporting cast of boutique producers including David Traeger Wines, Goulburn Terrace and Dalfarras Wines.

The region is noted for its tranquil rural setting with picturesque stands of tall and shady red river gums and peaceful vistas over the Goulburn River and Lake Nagambie.

The viticultural influence of the river, lake and billabongs, combined with the regions rich red duplex soil was recognized by the Geographical Indications Committee in 2000 and Nagambie Lakes was declared a distinct sub-region within the greater Goulburn Valley.

The region has emerged as the home of Rhone varietals in Australia, with Marsanne in particular almost synonymous with the area and Viognier & Roussanne gaining increasing recognition and esteem.

The deeply flavoured, long living Shiraz of the region has become legendary and Nagambie Lakes boasts some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world located on the 1860's block at Tahbilk.

As well, the Portuguese varietal Verdelho is an acknowledged regional success story and there have been many plaudits earned for local releases of the more traditional varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay & Riesling.

A region for all tastes - and that's just the wines!

As you would expect from a region offering such a wealth of winery experiences, there are some wonderful food & dining experiences to compliment them - from cozy cafes to truly sophisticated restaurants plus an abundance of wonderful local produce available from the various Cellar Doors and other outlets to take home and savour later.

Need a break from wining & dining?

With access to the majestic Goulburn River and Lake Nagambie, coupled with the delightful Mediterranean weather experienced north of "The Divide", the region offers a range of water sport activities from fishing, water skiing, rowing and canoeing. Lake Nagambie is also home to one of Australia's premier rowing & canoeing venues which regularly hosts state and national championships.

And off the water (and off the ground!) you can also take advantage of world-class sky-diving and gliding.

Then there are of course the rural vistas, abundant native flora & fauna, history & much, much more!
